In the dark winter months there were very few visitors to the town and 2 young ambitious tattooists decided that they would head up to Glasgow and tattoo for the winter. Terry Wrigley and Jimmy Gould had both tattooed in Blackpool and their styles were very similar.
They formed a friendship through their mutual love of tattooing and that friendship endured for the next 40 years. In Jimmy heard the news that Bert Vallar had closed his shop in Glasgow and persuaded Terry to join him in a new venture up North. Terry and Jimmy found a vacant shop in one of the cities toughest areas and began tattooing. Thousands of men, and even some women, made the journey to the brightly painted tattoo parlour that sat next to the General Wolfe Public House.
The new style of tattooing being offered by Terry and Jimmy was completely different to anything Vallar had been famous for. Heavy outlines, larger pieces and solid colouring were quickly embraced by the Glaswegian population.
After a short time Jimmy decided that Glasgow was too rough for him and headed back to the relative safety of Blackpool.
Terry decided to stayon and made Scotland his home. He settled in Glasgow and dominated scottish tattooing for more than 30 years. His natural artistic skill and freehand tattooing were admired and copied by many others and his tattooing is still evident today on thousands of proud scots.
Terry corresponded with many other tattooists around the globe and was instrumental in forming several tattoo associations and clubs dedicated to elevating and promoting the art. Terry Wrigley passed away in after 34 years of tattooing in Scotland. During those years he passed on his skills to his sons Stuart and Steven. For further reading of Terry Wrigley please click here. Both artists spent over 40 years in the tattoo business and both passed the trade on to their children.
The Vallar and Wrigley names will be forever linked to scottish tattooing but there were many other great tattoo artists that worked in Scotland over the past years. In , an american named John Williams performed electric tattooing for the first time in Glasgow. Tom Riley followed shortly after and returned to the city many times over the years. Around this time several native scots left the country and plied their trade in England and farther afield. Glasgow born John Jack Bowman was a travelling showman who had learned the tattoo trade while on the road.
Ernest had been trained by George Burchett in London and during his training had received over tattoos from him. Winnie tattooed in Portsmouth, Aldershot and Edinburgh over a 30 year period.
Jimmy tattooed for over 40 years in Falkirk and Edinburgh until his death in Gil McLaren tattooed in Aberdeen in the early sixties.
Self-taught, Gil did some tattooing while serving in the RAF. He tattooed in Hull and London before returning to his native city of Aberdeen where he tattooed at various locations from until around Please visit www.
